Vacancy for Junior Ontology Consultant

Entry-level position in this innovative data science firm.

As a Junior Ontology Consultant you will help our clients make sense of their own worlds. Large organisations are often sitting on information that could transform how they work, but which remains invisible or unusable by their people because it hasn't been properly structured. Your job is to change that: to make it visible, knowable, and actionable.

You will explore their data, building visualisations of their information so it can be used to better effect; mostly using our OntoKai ontology management software.

You will use our bespoke systems and need to be comfortable using Google sheets, Google docs or Excel, and are used to using AI tools to support your work.

We have developed custom processes and tools in house, and training will be provided.

You...

  • Are methodical, conscientious, organised, accurate and even slightly pedantic.
  • Have a keen interest in words and a good understanding of the English language; any other language skills are a bonus, as are interests in software languages, architectural languages, or music.
  • Have a natural interest in structure and logic, yet you are comfortable with describing ambiguity.
  • Want to work with an exciting and innovative firm; and recognise that comes with opportunities and challenges.
  • Are open to new ideas, are curious, and comfortable with change.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a small team in a mixture of internal and customer-facing settings.
  • Can work to a deadline and do detail well.
  • Have the confidence to say you don't know, when you don't.
  • Notice when something needs doing, or is missing, and offer to do it.
  • Are looking for a relaxed but focused way of working.
  • Have a sense of humour.
  • Are very happy to chip in to help the team in whatever way makes sense.
  • Have access to your own transport, as the Kaiasm office location has no public transport support.

Role Summary

The role of an Ontology Consultant is to develop logical, semantically rich, and extensible conceptual data models, taxonomies and ontologies for our government and commercial clients across industries such as national infrastructure, health, retail and manufacturing.

You will support delivery of representations of client data by working in collaboration with the internal delivery team and the client to ensure that outputs accurately represent their data and their view of the world. This may include working across multiple projects at the same time.

You will also support OntoKai product development in identifying customer problems and to help the team develop specifications for product improvements based on your experiences working with the client.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identifying key entities, in conjunction with the team and the client.
  • Identifying relationships between the things people need to know about.
  • Identifying the properties of an entity to accurately describe them.
  • Delivering ontologies, taxonomies and other knowledge structures, in a variety of output forms, that are accurate and meet project requirements within the committed timescales.
  • Collaborating with the client and internal teams to communicate these models to stakeholders.
  • Adhering to information security policies, ensuring strict control of client information and data such that it is used as required but no further.
  • Answering the phone where required, generally mucking in and taking your turn making tea and coffee (including for our communal coffee at 11:00am).
  • Performing other reasonable duties as may be required by management from time-to-time.

Terms

  • 37.5 hours per week, school-hours variations available.
  • Hourly salary £13.45 (equivalent to £26,298 p.a.).
  • Working Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the office, Monday and Friday optionally from home after completion of training. Equipment provided.
  • Location: Kaiasm Ltd., The Grange Offices, Combe Farm, Whatley, Frome, Somerset BA11 3JU
  • Information: www.kaiasm.com, www.linkedin.com/company/kaiasm/

Experience

No prior experience in ontology is required. We welcome applications from early-career candidates and those looking to transition from related fields. You might have studied or worked in areas such as science, technology, data, philosophy, linguistics, information management, mathematics or law, but this is not essential. We are primarily interested in people who are comfortable working with structured information, reasoning clearly about complex concepts, and learning new frameworks quickly.

Aptitude

As part of your application process, you can expect to face this sort of challenge:

If you were building a system to categorise 'Transportation,' how would you handle a Flying Car? Is it a Car that flies, or an Airplane that drives? Does it matter? How would you decide where to put it?

Application

Please send your CV, a covering letter explaining why you’d like to join us, and a maximum 50-word answer to the Aptitude Challenge. Send it to recruitment@kaiasm.com.
